As a rising senior, Pharmaceutical Marketing-Healthcare Ethics major at Saint Joseph’s University, I have spent many hours contemplating what I want to do with my life. I’ve dropped and added classes, declared and undeclared minors, and even switched my major. And for once, I feel very confident in the direction my life is headed. And with that same confidence, I promise you that Marketeching Solutions has helped me shape that path.
As I wondered Saint Joseph’s University Career Fair back in February, I was so frustrated and confused. Every pharma-oriented company I talked to was only hiring accounting majors or looking for students to be assistant store managers, which was not something I was interested in. But right before I gave up, I had the most amazing conversation with three of the most intelligent and welcoming people I had ever met. They told me about this cool, growing company and they used words like “social listening” and “actionable insights”. I truly had no clue what they were talking about, but I knew that I wanted to try my best to have an internship at Marketeching Solutions.
After two rounds of interviews that spanned over over a couple weeks, I was offered a spot as a Social Media Analyst Intern and I accepted the position the same day. I was so excited. I had never had an internship that was pharmaceutical related and I was looking forward to put my education and skills to the test. My first day was in late June and I was so ready to work. I was bizarrely overdressed my first day on the job and I took notes one everything that anyone said. Training went well and it was great to speak with the other interns. Everyone in the office was so kind. Not only was I impressed by the amount of effort that each individual put into their own research but I loved how they encouraged and inspired ideas in one another. I admire that sort of teamwork and collaboration.
I was shocked when I received my first assignment the second day I was there. I was to help Claire on a project she was completing. I was nervous that I was going to mess it up, delete all her work, or accidently crash her hard drive (or just do something completely terrible)! But Claire was able to calm my nerves. She was a great teacher: not afraid to call me out on my mistakes, quick to send me updates and feedback, and kept me just as invested in the project as she was. It was a great first project to be on and I’ve been able to carry over the things I learned then to the projects I’m working on now.
I know it’s only been six weeks or so but I am so grateful for all the things Marketeching Solutions has taught me. I’ve learned to manage my time better and that patient, thorough work is more important than high-quantity, low-quality work. I’ve learned that some creative thinking is necessary to understand the material at hand. I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help especially when surrounded by such thoughtful and hard working people. I’ve learned that no day can be productive without a trip to Starbucks. And that the internet is a wonderful and crazy source.
